Today's day started off with our morning announcements. We had a costume judging contest.

Here are the final contestants:

Sami, in grade 1 took away the title with his robot costume. Well done Sami.
Out of the teachers, Miss Jaskolka won with her unicorn costume!

Our morning assembly took longer with the fun events. We went straight to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE, we wrote in our agendas. Today's notes were:

-Read for 20 mins
-Spelling & Cursive (due Friday)
-Math unit test Thurs

I know that it will be a busy night so do your best.

we had math. Today was another review day. Today we did a scavenger hunt to find the answer to a riddle: "Why did the Dracula take cough medicine?"

Students had to look around the classroom for addition and subtraction problems that has an alphabet letter attached to it. When they got their sum or difference they had to write the letter that came with it on their worksheet.

Why did the Dracula take cough medicine?
To stop his coffin!😂

After this activity we worked on correcting our previous math worksheets. Tomorrow will be the last day of review, and Thursday will be our test.

Then it was time for first lunch and recess.

After lunch, we had language. Today for language we worked on a recount in letter format. Their task was to recount their weekend as a letter to me. We started off modelling how to brainstorm the events of the weekend and the writing conventions that make their writing successful.

In our writing the success criteria that we came up with was:
-Adjective
-Past tense
-Recount words (First, then, next, after, finally, before, later)
-Letter format
-Capitals
-Organised
-Punctuation
-Spelling

We then began to write our recounts. We will continue writing this tomorrow.

Next, we went to French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

When we went returned we talked about our IB learner profile of the month which is knowledgeable.
We began writing about what we are knowledgeable in and how we share our knowledge. The attitude that goes along with it is independence. So we also wrote about what being independent is and how to show it.

Next we got ready for home and went to our Halloween Dance!

Stay safe and warm tonight if you are going trick or treating! Also if you have extra candy that you don`t desire, please bring it in and we will be donating it to the Eden Community Food Bank for the children who don`t get the opportunity to take part in these activities.

Monday 30 October 2017

Last Monday of October!

This morning's announcements included our month awards presentation. We celebrated the IB Learner profile: knowledgeable. Our winner this month is Rohaan!

Unfortunately, Rohaan was sick today.

Today's agenda notes are:

-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet
-Halloween tmw (wear Halloween costume or orange and black) - no weapon, scary costumes masks or facepaint) Candy can be distributed but not eaten at school
-Spelling pg. 38-40
-Recorder
-Math Unit test Thurs

Our morning work today was a Halloween themed math sheet using addition to find the hidden message.

After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

Today for math, we started our review for our test on Thursday. We reviewed all the concepts we hae learned this unit, which included:
-Patterns in addition and subtraction
-Related Facts
-Adding and subtracting double and triple digit numbers
-Mental math strategies for addition and subtracting
-Estimating

Three digit subtraction

We then started our review package. This package is in their pink folders but it is NOT for homework. We are working on it in class, but there is a subtraction worksheet for homework.

After math it was time for lunch and recess.

For language today we had our spelling lesson on the "long U" words. We started off with a list of words and students had to identify which words did not belong. This led into the discussion of the "long u" words. We realised these words include "u_ e", "ew", "ue", and "ou". Then we worked in our spelling books if they didn't finish it is for homework.

This weeks spelling words are:
1) rule
2) use
3) tune
4) mule
5) due
6) true
7) grew
8) few
9) you
10) cute

Then we went to music with Mr. Oliver, and French with Mme. Stella. We were interrupted in French by a fire alarm. All was okay, it was a practice!

Next, it was time for second lunch and recess.

For UOI today we identified items for immigration.

We talked about the Fort McMurray Fire and identified it as being an environmental push factor. We read a news article and video about what children brought with them and why.

Afterwards, we pretended to assume the role of an immigrant and identify 4 items we wanted to bring with us and explain why. I drew the suitcase on the board and explained that, that it is all they get to take with them. Many students explained that their stuffed animal would be something, some books, and some other special toys.

Then we handed out our agendas and got ready for home.

Friday 27 October 2017

Happy Friday!

Today's agenda notes are:

-Read for 20 mins
-Math unit test next Thurs (Nov 2)
-Read on Raz Kids one day this weekend (or more)
-Recorder (if you need to bring it in)
-Math worksheet (Practice!:))

Then we some Daily 5 and after we did minute math! Today's time was 2 minutes.

After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE, we had math. Today's learning objective was solving three digit subtraction with and without regrouping. We learned that sometimes there's no tens to borrow from so we have to borrow from the hundreds.

We started from the ones and looked - if there was more on the floor we go next door, OH but there's still more on the floor here so we have to go to the hundreds!

We worked on a few problems as a class with students demonstrating their work and explaining their thinking. We did different types of questions some without regrouping, some where you only have to regroup the tens, and some where you have to regroup the hundreds and tens.

This is a written copy of one of the problems we did on the whiteboard. We talked about how we know we need to subtract. I used a bar model to show the students the number we are looking for. Also in word problems we are not given the question in lovely columns so how do we know how to arrange it? We know that the larger number has to go on top!

After we practiced on our worksheets.

Then it was time for first lunch and recess.

After recess we had our spelling test!

When we were finished we began looking at the four types of push and pull factors for the reasons why people migrate. We recapped the reasons we talked about yesterday, then we read a book together about a family that had to migrate from Beirut. It talked about Sauossan who faced hardships and escaped a war in her home country to come to Canada. Upon arrival she had a new class and in the class she couldn't understand anything because she didn't speak English; she also couldn't read or write. An interesting conversation came up with our class as to how even though we may not speak the same languages from people we can still communicate with our body language.

In the story, when it was Halloween at her school she was TERRIFIED because she had no idea what was happening and thought she was being attacked like in a war back in Beirut.

After reading we added to our list of reasons why people migrate.

Then we had French with Mme Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

When we returned we continued with our UOI lesson. We consolidated by discussing  responsibility of moving to another country, and looking at what people do when they arrive. Here is the list we compiled.

To finish off the day we had TRIBES time.

We started off with partnering up (with someone who we normally don't partner up with) and their task was to create a handshake. They have to remember their handshake because going forth they will be giving each other positive encouragement!

Next we did an activity where we wrote positive words that would lift someone up, this is our kind and caring place mats. Each student received a paper and wrote their name on it. Their task was to go around to every other student's paper and write words of encouragement. (I told them they have to think about reasons specific for that person and it can't be things like  "You are nice"...why because each person is different and we want to make sure each comment is unique)

Here are a few:

They will be posted behind my desks for students to revisit when they are feeling a bit down to remind themselves how awesome they are and how supportive their class it.

We finished off with some golden time before getting ready for home.

Have a lovely weekend.

Thursday 26 October 2017

Today's agenda notes are:

-Read for 20 mins
-Math unit test next Thurs (Nov 2)
-Book order due tmw
-Recorder
-Math Worksheet
-Cursive pg. 30-33
-Spelling pg. 34-37
-Lunch order form due tmw (for November) online

-Also important notes from our morning announcements regarding Halloween/Harvest Day. Students are permitted to wear their costumes (no scare masks or facepaint and no weapons). You can also wear orange and black.

Then we worked on our writing a recount draft from yesterday.

After we went to PE with Mrs Jans.

Today for math we learned addition with three digit numbers with and without regrouping.

We started off with our word problem:

St. Jude's Academy has 425 students and Suffah Academy has 248 students. How many students are there altogether. We went through the problem and identified why we know we need to add. (Because of the word altogether )  We also underlined the numbers because they are important.

We modeled as a class how to do the standard algorithm with three digits

1)      Always start from the ones, 8+5=13
22)      We have to regroup 13 and carry ten over to the tens column
33)      The ten is represented in the tens column as a one
44)      We add up the tens column (1+7+4=12)
55)      12 tens makes 120 so we have to carry 10 tens over to the hundreds
66)      It is represented by one in the hundreds column
77)      Then we add up the hundreds column (1+4+2=7)
88)      We have our final answer of 723.

We then did a few more problems together as a class with some students explaining their thinking and how they got their answer. Some of the problems included regrouping the ones but may not have had to regroup, but the tens did.

We also used pictures to show how to carry over.

After math it was time for first lunch and recess.

When we came back, we worked on our recounts again, we are working on improving our drafts using feedback, and editing our work. We started off together identifying the first, then, next and finally events in the video, and inputting bullet notes for each section to sequence the movie.

We discussed how we can use different words so that we are not saying, then, then, then, then. We also came up with a few other words such as: after, later, in the end, at the beginning.

Afterwards, we went to music and French. In between we had our pictures taken!

After French we had second lunch and recess.

When we returned we took a few more minutes to finish our writing.

Then we talked about our IB Learner profile of the month which is knowledgeable, we wrote down what it means to us and also about the attitude independence.

To finish off we started categorising reasons why people migrate including both push and pull factors. We put them into four categories,

  • Environmental (natural disasters, no food (food comes from animals and plants) or generally being in a more peaceful environment.
  • Social (escape war)
  • Political (more freedom or speech and expression, the right to vote)
  • Economic (more jobs)
We are still working on reasons why people migrate and will be learning more reasons why people migrate and looking at the responsibility of moving to another country,. We will also be looking at what people do when they arrive.

Then we got ready for home!

Wednesday 25 October 2017

Today's agendas notes are:

-Read for 20 mins
-Food Drive due Oct 26
-Book order due Friday
-Picture day tmw
-Math worksheet
-Cursive pg 30-33
-Spelling pg 31-37

Remember to get November lunch orders in this Friday.
Also, since there are lots of baked goods left we will be extending the bake sale until tomorrow.

After agendas we did our daily 5 as a class using our reciprocal reading.
We came across a few new words and used some strategies to help on figure out what they meant.
1)  We ready before and after the word,
2)  We looked at the root word (destruction --> destruct)
3)  We broke it into syllables (landslide --> land slide)
4)  We used the glossary!

Afterwards we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE we had math, today we looked at using mental math strategies to solve subtraction problems. We used friendly numbers, adding to match the ones (because if the ones are the same, zeros the game, and subtraction the tens then counting back.

Adding to match the ones

Subtracting the tens, then counting back
Friendly Numbers
We worked in groups to solve our word problems using as many strategies as we could. For each strategy we know we are correct when all of the answers are the same for each strategy.

Afterwards we worked on our worksheet for mental math with subtraction, this focused on subtracting by 10's.

Then we went to first lunch and recess.

After lunch and recess, we developed our anchor chart for recount writing.
Also, it needs to be in past tense!

We then went to Suffah Academy to check out their science fair!

Aryana and Esha learning about a powered car.
Some of our friends from Miss Jaskolka's class learning about how baking soda and vinegar make a volcano.

Learning about salt and water.

This was really neat, they looked at the effects of coke, tea, and coffee.

Cola is quite acidic and caused the egg to crack...😱

Thank you Suffah Academy for inviting us!

When we came back it was time for French with Mme Stella.

After French it was time for second lunch and recess.

After recess we watched a short video called Partly Cloudy to aid our recount writing. In the video our guiding task was to keep in the the what, what, where, when, and why so that we can put it into a chart to help us when we need to write in paragraphs.

We filled in the chart, and started off together with our opening sentence. After students worked independently to finish their writing.

Finally we handed out our agendas and got ready for home.

Inside

We witnessed how they power the streetcar using wires.

It took us to the museum with several types of streetcars, and subway carts...even one from Chicago.

This was inside one of the subway carts!!!!

Mr. Gary also explained to us that since we are learning about migration that people usually used ships and boats. He showed us the carts that transport people with all their luggage and showed us some vintage suitcases.

We also got to explore other locomotives, and modes of transportation.

When we came back to school we organised our IB portfolio binders by identifying and putting in our work that we feel we worked the hardest on, the best on, and what we can improve on.
