Speeches

January 10, 2017
SJA Annual Oral Competition
Semi-Finals –Monday, February 5th
Finals - Friday, February 9th
SJA/Maples Interschool Competition – Thursday, February 15th

Dear Parents,

January is a time for enjoying the winter weather, getting back to routines and…speeches! Instead of memorising a poem for the speech competition students will be retelling a story this year.
Public speaking is an integral part of growing up.  As teachers, we strive to ensure that the students’ experiences are positive and rewarding, resulting in increased self-esteem and confidence.
Students in grades one to three will retell a story in their own words (either from a book or from their own personal experience). Students will write the retell in class and at home. Students will be able to seek assistance from myself and from their parents/guardians. Once finished, students will work on memorising their speech.  The speech should be between 3-5 minutes.
In class I will be outlining requirements and strategies for effective speech presentations.

Starting on Monday January 15th, students will have time each day to work on speeches in class and to meet with me one-on-one. Please ensure that your child brings in the book that they want to retell by Monday. Students are able to begin writing their retell at home before Monday. Students are expected to have chosen a book by Monday and to have completed a brainstorm for their speech for this date.

In-class speech presentations will take place on February 5th or 6th or 7th. I will advise you of the specific date as I evaluate the students’ progression.
Some students will be selected to move on to present to the student body and judges in the auditorium on February 9, 2018.

We will need support from parents too. You can help by:
  • ensuring your child sticks to our schedule when assigned work does not get completed in class
  • discussing and approving your child’s retell ideas
  • discussing the format of a retell with your child
  • helping your child revise their speech
  • listening to your child practice their speech and giving them pointers
Thank you for your continued support as we continue to foster this lifelong skill!
